How to use

This website features more than 200 historical images of hwuhwilmuhw (Hul’q’umi’num’ people). Some of these photographs may be familiar to viewers, having been published in books or used in other media, but most will not. Our project team is working to collect, digitize, and share as many historical photographs of hwuhwilmuhw as we can. As we do so, we are working to re-frame these historical images, locating them within hwulmuhw perspectives and bringing the family and community stories behind the photographs to light.

Each photograph on our website is identified with a descriptive name and tagged with keywords to help users find what they are looking for. Our keywords include  historical themes and activities, places, events, personal names, dates, original source, photographer’s name and more. Use our index or our search bar to find what you are looking for.
